We are pleased to present a new body of work by Claire Kerr, paintings inspired by her observations during her 6-week r/e projects Madrid residency in 2015.

The paintings in the exhibition are a response mainly to Spanish still-life painting of various kinds with a sort of ‘dismantling’ or even ‘decomposition’ taking place. Kerr has taken imagery from this visually rich and historic city to create her own, and by taking things out of their usual context, she offers us, on one hand, contemporary perspectives on art historical material, and on the other, an artistic view of quotidian life in Madrid. All together, Kerr presents a distillation of an experience of the city represented equally by its flowers strewn on the paths of its parks and the old master paintings hanging on the walls of its museums.

When we think of the visual arts, we do so with the idea that the artist’s role is to create art, and the viewer’s to look and react to it. But with her practice of combining art-historical and contemporary sources and allowing them to interact and communicate with each other, Kerr plays both roles wherein her creations are a result of her observations. And we, as viewers of her work, are given a window into her responses. Much more than a Madrid through her eyes, it is one that has been infused with her incredible knowledge of history, art and otherwise, and the curiosity of an archaeologist, rendered with the sensitivity of a poet.

Claire Kerr was born in Northumberland, England and lives and works in Dublin, Ireland. She is represented in London by Purdy Hicks Gallery where she has had numerous exhibitions. There will be an opening brunch preview on Friday, February 26 at 10:00am–noon as part of the ARTEMADRID Art Galleries Brunch in conjunction with the ARCO weekend events. The artist will be present.
